      Hello All

Thinking of making a Remington  700 BDL Varmint Special in caliber 25-223.

Only 75 Grain bullets will be used.

What twist??    1-10 be the best for this single application?

      Mike

Based on mountains of research for 25s and why the 250 Savage didn’t work well across the board .
The original was fitted with 1-12″ which was great for the full tilt 250-3000 and 87s . The 10″ is much more useable . It really comes to how you want to use the rifle . You said fast ,light and flat 75gr only , the slower available twists will do fine . A 10 twist will be much happier if you decide later on you want to shoot some of the heavies or the supper slick VLD or unleaded types .

Harter gave the perfect answer. If you’re going only with the bullets you stated, most will be perfectly happy with 1-12 twist.

However, rifles do have a tendency to outlast bullet supply, and in that knowledge, you would be safer with the 1-10, or even the 1-9. You probably wouldn’t see much of a difference with the lighter bullets, but you’ll sure feel the pinch if you decide to run longer bullets later.

I looked at the twist rate for the 25-45 Sharps and it looks like the most common is 1:10″ with one reference to 1:9 being the original twist, but they have moved to 1:10″

I believe the original 250 Savages had 14″ twist as do most 25-20s and 256 Winchesters.  The latter 2 handle 75 gr Sierra HP bullets quite well stabilizing it down to 1200 fps +/-.

If cast bullets is on the menu I definitely recommend the 14″ twist.  I’d also prefer grooves .004″ deep so I’d want a bore at .249 and grove diameter at .257.
