After typing the header I really realized how hard it was top pick my favorite powders. I really prefer the older IMR and Hodgdon powders. I use most of these either way for jacketed or cast.

My favorites listed in no particular order.

4198 H or Imr either will do
      Varget
      IMR 3031
      IMR 4064
      4895 H or Imr
      BLC-2
      H 335
      IMR 4320
      IMR 4831
US 896 I think that this is an awesome cool burning powder for the big over bore rifles.

These are my mainstays, which powders do you always have on hand?

The three I try and buy when I seem them are 4198, 4895, and Varget. Although I also scoop up 1200-r when I see it too just for .223 and my progressive.

Pretty easy for me IMR 4350 and Unique. . However I’ve Added another for some small cases. I really wanted it to be H4189 but I don’t think it will happen probably 10x.

For Rifle (I don’t shoot cast in rifles….I know…shame on me)

      H4350 (.243 Win w/ 95 grn Berger VLDs)
      Reloader 15 (.223 Rem w/ 69 grn SMKs)
      H335 (.223 Rem w/ 55 grn FMJ plinkers)
      Varget (.308 Win w/ 168 grn SMKs)
      H4895 ( 7.62x54R, 7.5×55 Swiss, etc)

For pistol, even though you didn’t ask

W231 for plinking in all pistol (.32 auto to 500 SW mag)
      H110/W296 for full power “revolver” loads (357, 44, 500)
Longshot for full power semiauto loads (9, 10, 40, 45)

I was hoping someone would come up with a post like this. I like what IllinoisCyoteHunter did with his post. Let me know which powder do you like with each caliber. This helped me already.

For me Red Dot is the most flexible, useable across the widest spectrum, so it is what I have the most of.

After that I have a couple of old standby’s. IMR 3031 is what I first started loading with many many moons ago. IMR 4895 is my #1 choice where I must have a certain level of performance, such as loads for my old Yugo SKS. 20 grains of IMR 4895 under a 150 or 185 grain cast boolit and that old girl walks and trots like a dream.

Last one I like to keep on hand is IMR 4227. Handy for full power loads in .357 mag, useful in a variety of cartridges.

For SHTF I have a lot of Promo. It is cheap and it will work in anything (12 ga, Pistols and low velocity rifle)- not the best for everything but it will send lead downrange

Others I have for rifle are:
      Varget
      4350
      4895
      3031

      Pistol and Shotguns
      Unique
      HP38
      Longshot
      Green Dot

A bunch of others for testing but the above are the ones I keep in quantity.

I was actually going to ask about pistol/shotgun powder favorites in another post, but with out a doubt Red Dot or Promo is my number favorite powder period.

I like just about every pistol/shotgun powder made by Alliant mainly due to the fact that they are bulky.

I guess my fav pistol powders are

      Red Dot/Promo
      Unique
      Titegroup
      Hs6
      Bullseye
      H110/Win 296
      Longshot
      800x
      Blue Dot
      231

Honestly I could get by with just Red Dot, Titegroup for my progressive presses, H110, and Unique

4227, 2400, and Red Dot for my lower velocity cast loads

Since I reload mostly cast in rifles, 30-30 , 308 , 30-06 7.5 Swiss and 303 British , now days, It’s been Unique and Red Dot.

With jacketed bullets in those, I’m still using 4895 . Would like to try Varget , but have found none on dealer’s shelves , been looking a good 4 years…but don’t really need it, 4895 gets job done and I had several cans squirreled away before ” the shortage “.

Red Dot : for just about everything cast but mostly in 30-06 and 8×57 “The Load”
      2400 : .357mag 45-70
      h335 : .223

*****h4895***** : .223 is main use but read when in reloading infancy “when data for one of the 4895’s is listed it is ALWAYS worth trying”….I’ve found that good advice
      4064 : 8×57
      4831 : 6.5×55,30-06
      4350 H and IMR : .243,30-06
      Varget : .223,.308
      5744 ; 45-70
      4198 : 45-70
