i don’t know where to this, but i’ll start here.

i want to try a 500 linebaugh in my tc encore that goes roughly 23-25″ barrel. i’m going to go with a 450gr lfn at about 1300-1500fps.

my question is, should my rifle twist be a 1 in 28″(MGM barrels) or should it be a 1 in 18″(bullberry barrels)? i’ve sent off emails to both of them, but i would like your advice.
what twist would you recommend for a 450-530gr cast boolit?(the 500’s gr would be just for fun, the 450gr is for deer/black bear?)

    thanks,
    todd

Either twist would probably do, but I would go with the 1:28

Just looking at the 50 cal in general.
I have the 500 S&W Revolver and I am not sure what twist they put in it.

My Shiloh Sharps .50/90 has a 1:36 twist and it shoots 500 gr bullets at 1200 fps great.

Shiloh is now putting a 1:24 twist in the .50/90 so people can shoot 700 gr bullets .

No thanks, the 500 is plenty for me.

Look at the length of the bullets you plan to shoot. If they are shorter than 1.300 inches, then the 1-28 is more than adequate to stabilize those bullets.
I have no idea what the purpose of the 1-18 would be, unless you’re shooting ultra heavy bullets at extremely slow speeds (like a bullet that is 1.75 inches long loping along at 650FPS).
Seems to me the 1-28 is more practical.

Both my 50 BMG barrels are 1-15 , post 2&3 are correct as usual. Unless you plan on shooting long .510 BMG projectiles threw a .500 bore, 1-28 will be way more forgiving on cast boolitz. IMHO

hahaha!!!! i dang near spilled my coffee all over my ‘puter!!!:D

although a 500 L has a .510″ bore, i do not want to shoot a BMG bullet, 450gr is good enuff for me!;) esp at 100-125 yards(max) with cast.

but you guys are right, a 1 in 28″ twist is what i need. thanks again.
