Never messed with the stuff before, but it seems kind of like Unique, all grown up with big boy pants on.
It first came on my radar when I got started looking for a replacement for SR4756 in the ten gauge. Seemed like the best choice for that.
Then I finally replaced my sidearm (sold my 1911 2 years ago), with a S&W 1076 in 10mm Auto.
Once again, I found Longshot standing out from the crowd.
Seems the tens both like it. Interesting!

Well, last night, I was had a few folks over for a pleasant evening of dinner and shooting. Before they got here, I loaded up five of the 10mm, and chronographed them. I wasn’t happy with that, so I adjusted the load hotter, and retested. Bingo. Sweetness.

As I was stacking up enough to have fun with, my mind wandered to my Ruger Redhawk. I sure wanted to shoot that baby again. Such a fine firearm!
The powder measure was still set up for Longshot, and that powder is in the right ballpark for the 44, and I had a pile of Lee 310 PB cast and lubed, so I decided to see what was recommended.
Not only was there data, but the recommended charge was identical to the 10mm load. 9.5 grains for either gun. 180 grain bullets for the 10mm and 300 grain bullets for the 44.)
I loaded up a few and chronographed them. The Lonshot gently escorted the 310 grain bullets through the sky screens at 967-978 FPS. The recoil pulse was very pleasant in comparison with other powders I have tried. Later when company was here, I was shooting the Redhawk one handed and exploding water bottles at 10-20 yards. The loads shoot to the sights one handed or two handed. I think I’m in love!!!!

      No I haven’t. I think I’ll try it in the 45-70 next.

I’ve used it a bunch in a 10mm. But I’ve found 800-X to be more better. Sure it meters horribly but the Chargemaster is able to have a charge thrown every time a case is ready for it on a 550B. I don’t have any other firearms that either powder would be well suited for. Maybe I need to rectify this situation :p

I’ve got an 8lb jug of 800X coming. A little barter deal with a fellow I’m doing some work for. LOL!

Thank you for catching my typo. My computer still isn’t set up, so all my posts have been coming from my phone, and sometimes I fat finger it.
Hey it’s good for a laugh if nothing else! LOL!

Hmmm, may have to snag some Longshot to feed my S&W 1006 10mm as well as my Redhawk 44. Thanks for the performance report in those cartridges.

800X seems to be THE powder for the 10mm top end loads. I use Power Pistol for mid-range 10mm loads.

Dig it with the Lee 310grain. I bored the GC shanks off mine and tumble lube them in 45-45-10.

I bought an 8lb jug of 800X recently. I haven’t tried it in the 44, but for 10 gauge shotgun its the bomb. I bought the Lee 180gr 6 cavity mold and I’m going to see what I can get out of the 1076.

Does Longshot work OK with reduced rifle loads?
That is my first question on many powders.

When you take a long look at shotgun data, Longshot is used for many of the heavier loads.
And so is BlueDot, Herco. 800x 2400.
It seems that the Allient shotgun powders all shoot reduced loads well.
      Does Longshot have same attributes?

I like the way your mind works.
Im going to work with it in several of my rifles and see what shakes out.

I wish there was a list of powders that shoot reduced loads well, and, a list that does NOT shoot reduced loads well.
      Example,
Bullseye, Unique, IMR4895, shoot reduced loads well, and safely.
296, H110, 4350 are dangerous in a reduced load, and cause detonation.

I just got a .480 Ruger last week, and I noticed with a 400 grain bullet, Longshot can push it to about 1080fps, while twice the amount of a typical magnum pistol powder can only safely gain about 150 to maybe 200fps. Since I already had some on-hand, I’m starting out with Longshot. Probably won’t have much need for many heavier loads.

I put 10 grains under the Lee 310 bullet in 44. Mighty pleasant to shoot, hard hitting and accurate.
