my friend’s dad(my dad #2) wants to hunt with an tc encore in 22″ virgin valley custom gun(vvcg). since i own a tc encore in 444 marlin(23″ MGM barrel) i say what heck, i’ll handload for him.

i and my friend’s dad took out my handloads(41gr of rel7 under a 280gr lfn gc, around 2000fps) to shoot his gun. he decided that it kicked a little, would i be able to download the 280gr? yes i could. i know i can use 38.5gr of rel7, but i have several pounds of 2400 that i don’t have the needs for.

could i use 24 or 25gr of 2400 under a 280gr lfn gc and go up from there?

    thanks!!!

That’s a reasonable starting point. You’ll probably be doing 1200-1500 FPSish right there.

However, if you are looking for reduced loads with precision, I would recommend going to jacketed bullets. Cast bullets really need to be driven pretty hard with medium powder in order to get true precision of any kind with straight walled cases (although, both cast and jacketed get best precision with top loads).

thanks!!! if it can do minute of deer(100-125yards) then he’ll be happy. i am going to try 38.5gr of rel7 just to see what happens.

i have tried 38.5gr of rel7 with a 280gr lfn gc and it will do a one holer at 50 yards(5 shots, benched). i didn’t find the recoil to bad, i found it quite pleasant to shoot.(don’t have a chrony)

    then i tried(each grain was two shots) 24.0, 24.5, 25.0, 25.5 and 26.0gr of 2400 under a 280gr lfn gc. i (it might be me)
found that it does work and the recoil seemed to be about the same as 38.5gr of rel7. although the 2400 did go lower(about 1 – 2″ low), it seems to be a great deer killer(100 – 125 yards or less). also the 26.0gr of 2400 seems to be THE choice, but i only shot two of them they did a one holer too. i wish i still had my chrony, so i could tell you what velocity it is.

pix of three different loads, 25.0, 25.5 and 26.0gr of 2400

my friend’s dad likes the 25.5gr of 2400(280gr wfn gc) in his tc encore. he did 4 out of five shots a one holer at 100 yards. the 5th opened the group to around 1 3/4″ at 100 yards.

    i am going to try 26.5, 27.0, and 27.5gr of 2400 under a 280gr lfn gc.

does anyone have a load for 300-325gr boolit with 2400?
