Have to load a few 40 S&W and do not have much experience with it. Remember I come from the Single Action Army to the 44 Mag. crowd.
Want to use Unique with the Lee 175 gn. TCTL. Just cannot seem to come up with constant information as it looks like everyone is using more modern powders but am thinking 5.5 gn. should be safe enough but will it function a S&W M and P ?

      Thanks up front !!

I loaded for a XD 40 the similar conventional lube bullet and an LBT gave best accuracy at the max load from the Lyman 49th of 5.7 gr for 940 fps if I am remembering correctly, the 5.7 gr is correct.

Not a barn burner but not anything I’d like to be on the business end of.

5.5 gr. of Unique with the RCBS 180 flat point @ 1.140″ works very well in my CZ 75. Another similar load with a bit more accuracy is 5.8 gr. of Herco; everything else the same.

      Gentlemen, thank you.
Looks like I might want to up the load to 5.5 and I like the idea of trying Herco. Have had good luck with it in the past.
Will load up a box or two and report back.
      Again, I thank you.

I’ve had good luck with both Power Pistol and Red Dot in .40 S&W.

I also shoot a XDM and have been using tightgroup with success. I know this isn’t your components, but a little goes a long way

Dan, I haven’t ever tried any titegroup but have heard good things about it. May have to pick up a can next opportunity.

Charlie, I do have some Red dot and have used it in some other pistol and very light rifle loads. Do you have any recommended loads ? I will have to stay with the 175 gn Lee cast bullet for now.

I use 4 gr Titegroup under a 180 TC lead bullet in my Glock 27. Great round. Might work for you.

      If you go to
      http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/

and look up 40 S&W it will show you lots of data

I have used 231/ win super target/ and max loads using win super field

I use a progressive and seat at one stage and crimp at the next, using a med to heavy crimp

a tumble lube bullet might not be the best as the 40 is a high presure round

Both of the Lee shoot the same for me. Unique is not the easiest to meter, that load will cycle the M&P OK. Might want to try BLL for it, no lube cooking and works.
