1/8″ to 1/4″ brass rod would work if you can find some in your area and would be safer than steel. You would have to fix some sort of handle on it and it will wear quicker than a steel punch but would last through a days shooting and you can file a new flat on your brass punch when you get home ready for the next days shooting. Part of the fun of muzzle loading is making the a lot of the stuff you need to make these guns work.
