great article … i would add that …… you should get a standard test piece at about the same thickness as the part you want to measure . the reason for that is because the lead screw in the mic will wear at that area if it used for A LOT of that diameter measuring . at zero the threads can be perfect… but at 0.308 it might be getting worn . for a starret/mitutoyo ….. not very likely … but for a chinese $12 mic … much more likely ….. for years i used a sierra match bullet for a standard ..just to see if the reading moved . …. check that your improvised standard is really round if you use a bullet ( g ) …
