Though the orginal Wilkes check system years ago used a punch set up to knock out the bottom of a standard 30 cal gas check, which left a shoulder at each driving band, to anchor it to the boolit.

You could also look into tubular cast in place jacket
Walt of NEI sold those in .375 caliber

you cut 3/8 tubing instead of just the wilkes bands.

Could try different alloy – like Zinc?
